We had a great time at the jog-a-thon despite the rain! I tried to get pictures of everyone, but some kids were just too fast! ;) All pledge money is due by November 1st. Prize winners will be announced shortly after.

Last week we learned about two new strategies that help us read words with long vowels. Here are the two songs we learned to help us remember the strategies! We have had a busy first month of school! Students are settling into our classroom routines and learning a lot! This website is just one more way for you to stay connected to what is happening in our classroom. I will post photos of things that are happening as well as resources that may help you help your child at home with their learning.
Here are some photos of students painting a cover for their poetry binders where they will collect poems throughout the year. Students have also gotten a chance to use our Listen to Reading Center which is one of our literacy rotations. We had a great time on our field trip to the Newmark Theater to see "The Naked Mole Rat gets Dressed"! Thank you to all of the parent volunteers who came with us!
This week we focused on strategies that strong readers use, as well as the elements of a strong retell. All of the things on these posters are things you can encourage your child to do during their reading homework. We have been talking about how reading is not just about reading the words on the page correctly, but is also about understanding the words that we read. A lot of the strategies on these posters will help students with deeper comprehension, and therefore a stronger retell!
We had a great time during the jog-a-thon this past Wednesday. The weather was great, and kids had a fun time jogging and walking to raise money for our school! Pledge money is due October 31st. You can send it into school in your child's folder. Here are some pictures from the day!
Students have been working very hard this first month of school to build their reading stamina. This means reading for a long period of time, without giving up! Our first goal was 10 minutes of uninterrupted reading. We met our first goal and celebrated with an extra recess. Now we are working toward a new goal of 15 minutes. You can ask your child about how our stamina building is going! Here are some pictures of students working to build their stamina :)
We had a blast on our field trip to the Oregon Zoo this past Friday! The weather was great, and we got to see lots of animals. Thank you to all of the parent volunteers who joined us, and made the trip possible. Here are some pictures from the trip for you to enjoy! :)
On Wednesday, all of the first graders performed a song they have been working on in music class. If you were unable to attend, you can watch the video here!
